Calibrated response my a**. If you want a reason to declare a state of emergency, at least be imaginative, like your seeming idol, Ferdinand Marcos. At least they had the imagination of blowing up JP Enrile's car as a precursor to declaring martial law. But he didn't jump into it straight away. He tested the political waters by first declaring a suspension of the writ of habeas corpus. He then lined up his generals and ran the idea by them. They were called the Rolex 12. Only Gen. Rocky Ileto refused to go along with the plan, so Marcos rewarded him with ambassadorships to Iran and Thailand.
It will be interesting to see where the generals will go with this version of martial law c/o GMA. Who will be GMA's Fabian Ver? Who is her Abadilla? Maybe it's time to start planning the construction for the new bunch of "Los Desaparecidos" (Missng Ones) although ironically, in this country, with the death by murder rate of journalists being so very high, it may be more important to start a wall of "Los Muertos" (the Dead) featuring all the journalists who were killed during GMA's watch. Go GMA? I think not...

Where is the outrage?

The arrest of M R Aquino and Pinoy FBI man only goes to show that GMA's bespren, GW Bush, is spying on our country. So where is the outrage?

Maybe we can ask the Filipina Chef in 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. to start sending us some tidbits that she picks up while preparing ribs for Doubtful Dubya. This is the bigger picture here. Sure it may have been wrong for these guys to serve time, which they probably will. But since only an accredited foreign agent can spy on us, why not tell the public his name, so that we can email the Kano all the chismis he wants. Better yet, ask Vic Agustin to have lunch with him. Ayos na ang buto-buto. And maybe we should train our spies better. The way it goes should be that we spy on them, not on ourselves. Duh.

Poor President Bush. The New Orleans tragedy disrupted his vacation. Now he has to actually work. Sacre Bleu! It is not true that the reason US Government Aid to victims of the Hurricane Katrina is being delayed is because they are stamping "Aid Package courtesy of GW Bush" but then they ran out of ink so shipping goods had to stop.

Amazing!! Now the Palace is pointing it's fingers at the resigned cabinet secretaries in some grand conspiracy theory. Next thing you will know, they shall be blamed for the President's Hello Garci tape. I know now that there is nothing a politician will do to drag everyone down with them. Shame on you, Garci's galore.

Boy-Secretary of PGMA has decided that all the nine Cabinet secretaries schemed and plotted against GMA prior to resigning. Apparently, this boy has no idea of what the word "principle" means. With regards to his stinging comments about the nine resigning, it is sad to see that he has totally no idea of what transpired, even sadder to see that he has nothing to say except that the nine were wrong and GMA was right. 'Tis a sad day indeed when the Presidents men see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil. By preemptively asking for the Cabinet's resignation, the president showed that it was she who was displaying Machiavellian tactics, and no one else. The president asked for the resignations and she got them. So what is Defensor's problem?

The Joke of the Day is how that television station announces that it delivers 24 hours of news but signs off at 130-AM. As if we consumers haven't gotten the hint, they announced during the days' news that they had just garnered an award for ETHICS. These guys, the guys who got an Ethics award, should start earning their award by starting their news show at the right time, 6PM and the late evening news never start on time. As in 40 minutes late is how late. Ethics my a**. What government agency is supposed to look after these guys? After all, both the giant networks do it. I guess that's "truth in advertising" Pinoy style, not to mention teaching young kids about how to be punctual.

Keep checking this site for the latest on rally menus and amounts paid off for various rallies.

From PCIJ's Blog Pages comes the story of the Hawks and Doves in "Hello Garci's" Cabinet:

The 12 Cabinet members who urged the President to talk were Budget Secretary Emilia Boncodin, Social Welfare Secretary Dinky Soliman, Labor Secretary Patricia Sto.Tomas, Science Secretary Estrella Alabastro, Presidential Peace Adviser Teresita "Ging" Deles, Trade Secretary Juan Santos, Finance Secretary Cesar Purisima, Secretary for Government Mass Media Cerge Remonde, Education Secretary Florencio Abad, Defense Secretary Avelino Cruz, Energy Secretary Raphael Lotilla and Communications Director Silvestre Afable.
Among the hardliners in the Cabinet, who insisted that the President should not admit to anything, were Interior and Local Government Secretary Angelo Reyes, Public Works Secretary Hermogenes Ebdane, Transportation Secretary Leandro Mendoza, Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita, Justice Secretary Raul Gonzales, Chief Presidential Legal Counsel Merceditas Gutierrez, Presidential Management Staff Chief Rigoberto Tiglao and Environment Secretary Michael Defensor, according to sources.

NOLI de Castro, Franklin Drilon and Mike Defensor would all say they admired their President for showing exceptional courage. It took guts, they said, for her to humble herself and beg for the nation's forgiveness.
What courage, gentlemen? The confession had to be pulled out of her like a scrap of meat from a mangy dog's teeth. And not after her people first tried to cloud the issue with all that talk of a doctored tape, the proliferation of tapes and the female voice being Iggy Arroyo's.President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo's confession last Monday is no more an act of courage than was her admission on Rizal Day, 2002 that she was the source of this country's "never-ending divisiveness" and therefore would not run again because to do so would be to give the country more of it. If she had fulfilled her vow, that would have been an act of courage. But she did not. It's the same thing today. If she had resigned after admitting being the voice on the tape, that would have been an act of courage. But she did not. These are not acts of bravery, these are acts of knavery. But I'm glad President Arroyo has confirmed what the world has already known forever because it reduces things to absolute simplicity. The only things that need to be resolved now -- and this I address specifically to society, the Catholic Church and business, which have hemmed and hawed on the ground of not having anything to go on -- is the gravity of the sin and the appropriate punishment. How grave is the sin?Ms Arroyo says her conversation "with a Comelec official" was a mere "lapse in judgment." She never intended to influence anyone, or, heaven forbid, cheat. All she wanted to do was protect herself in that part of Mindanao. In any case, the counting was already over, nothing could be done to alter it. She won fair and square.I understand that a group of experts was hired -- at taxpayers' cost, of course -- to mount this production. Unfortunately, Ms Arroyo is not the easiest person to direct in a melodrama: She does not have the capacity to shed a tear or two, unlike Imelda, to suggest she feels the pain of the nation. Which was really all that this production had to bank on to sell its idea, an emotional assault to make people forget its argument. Because the argument sucks.Simply at face value, President Arroyo contradicts herself. If the counting was pretty much over and the votes in Marawi et al. could no longer affect it, what in God's name was she trying to protect? Why call up an official of the Commission on Elections (Comelec), who has better things to do than humor a candidate, even the incumbent President, to make kumusta? Even if you grant Ms Arroyo just wanted to protect her votes, it doesn't get better. Why wasn't the same privilege extended to Fernando Poe Jr., Raul Roco, Panfilo Lacson and Eduardo Villanueva? If I recall right, they were pounding on the Comelec's door with complaints of cheating, and were being routinely shunned. For President Arroyo to have access to the Comelec anytime, anywhere, anyhow, when her rivals did not by itself is cheating.Still at face value, for Ms Arroyo to even think any reason other than that she was withdrawing justified calling a Comelec official by itself makes her unfit for public office. That is a cardinal rule in elections, as inviolable as the sanctity of the vote itself. If the President can imagine transgressing it is a mere lapse in judgment, then there are no limits to what she will transgress. We do not need to look very far for other examples -- and horrendous consequences -- of President Arroyo's lapses in judgment. Acsa Ramirez knows that only too well. And that is only at face value. I won't dwell on the contents of the tape again. I've already highlighted its damning portions in a column, as has the Inquirer on its front page (June 28). And Ms Arroyo's CD has been more widely circulated than all this country's recording artists' albums combined. Of course, you'll still hear some people saying there's nothing "improper" in that conversation. That's what Defensor and Drilon said after President Arroyo's confession last Monday. I can believe that Defensor would say that. Anybody who says he rescued a kidnap victim who had the luxury of a cell phone while being held a prisoner will say anything. But the Senate president? Either he has very serious problems with his powers of comprehension or he is an absolute wimp. What is the appropriate punishment for the crime?President Arroyo herself says that is for us to forgive her, go on with our lives, and unite behind her as one nation. The text messages that inundated my cell phone shortly after she said that promptly showed me what people thought of that concept of crime and punishment. The murderers, rapists and robbers in the National Penitentiary, one message read, now also want to apologize and be set free. I myself had this image in my mind of a murderer telling the victim's kin: "I did it, I am sorry for my lapse in judgment, let us put this behind us, I want you to contribute to my favorite charity." It was that surreal. As I said before, there is a difference between Bill Clinton apologizing to the American people and Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo apologizing to the Filipino people to stave off being ousted. Clinton merely broke his vows of marriage, Ms Arroyo broke her vow of office. Clinton merely cheated his wife, Ms Arroyo cheated the nation. Clinton merely screwed his apprentice, Ms Arroyo screwed the voters. Clinton is best punished by leaving him to tender mercies of Hilary, Ms Arroyo is not best punished by keeping her to the tender mercies of Mike, however cruel that punishment is.Ms Arroyo has apologized to us and begged our forgiveness. Well, as Susan Roces says, if God can forgive, who are we not to? I myself have already forgiven Joseph Estrada even if he hasn't yet apologized and propose that he serve 20 years instead of 40.I forgive President Arroyo, too, and propose that she and her husband occupy separate cells instead of one.
Today is June 19, 2005. IMELDA MARCOS just asked the public to support GMA. It is quite easy to read through the ex-dictatress agenda. GMA has treated Imelda and her cases or better yet, GMA has NOT treated Imelda or her cases at all. She has pretended that the Marcoses have done nothing against the People of the Philippines. It is of no wonder then, that Imelda wants her in office for as long as she can stay there. She fears that any successor might decide to follow up on the cases against the Marcoses and maybe find justice, a foreign word to this government. This website hereby bestows upon the Viuda Loca's best friend and ally the much feared award of the "Ulirang Ina Mo" thus being only the second person to garner such a distinction.
Erap??-->Laarni-->Ong-->Doble. The plot thickens. As to what happens next, only the Shadow knows. But Erap has been too quiet all this time. At least until this event.

Sta te of Denial. Although we all see not a smoking gun but a flaming cannon, the poor palace cannot find it in their agenda to address the Tale of the Tape. It is as though the entire Filipino nation sees through them but they remain steadfast and seem to underestimate the People. Marcos did the same. And he remains the most despised president the country ever had. We are watching another apparently running the race to try and outrank him or, run a close second. Like marcos, lots of people saw the inside of jail cells. GMA's Justice secretary is anything but a justice secretary. He wants to throw as many people into jail as he can for mere possession of a tape that is all over the country. He will, given the chance, even throw in jail those who have cell phones with that ringtone. Hey, smartypants, if it is indeed fake, then why are you so defensive about it?
m million votes and a ringtone

US Embassy starts it's Ugly American efforts in meddling in affairs of RP while the Tale of the Tape issue comes to a boil. Without even knowing what the future will bring, the Americans have already declared that GMA is cleared of any wrongdoing. Maybe they should start working on their own President first before telling the Filipino what to do.
Miracle?? People tuned in to the ANC channel during the Jueteng hearings were shocked to learn that Senator Estrada can read when he read a certain faxed document during his turn at the questioning stage. By the way, it is interesting to note during the hearings that he utilises the three minutes alloted to his mother Loi Estrada but when the mike goes around, Loi Estrada is allowed to question the people in the hot seat. Akala ng tao binigay yun 3 minutes pero hindi pala...What sort of hearings are these? Oh well...it's still the Republic of Banana, wherein monkeys reside.

Is it true that the government has an anti-family planning policy so that there will be more people who can bet on jueteng?

Are you feeling ill? Feeling a tad unwell? Join the Corrupt Public Official Club, get yourself caught, and as soon as you are jailed, the GMA government will assure you that you will spend more time lounging in a cozy hospital room instead of the jail cell you deserve. It's the easiest way to get out of jail. Feign a chest pain. Complain about an ingrown toenail. Then rest easy. Gloria and Co. will send you to the best hospital the taxpayer can afford.
After all, who cares how many soldiers have died from the corrupt deals you entered as long as you have your New York residences, bought at the expense of the blood of our soldiers. Al long as you are happy, that is all that counts.

Japanese stragglers not coming down!! Masiao collections too good to let go of, one says. The two WW II stragglers in Mindanao refuse to return to their country because of the cool income from the numbers game. It appears that they are here for good, ArchBishop Cruz stated. They control the entire Mindanao area, and won't let go. The Japanese go by the code names NikNik and BangBang, he said. But Cruz said that he would not sending smoke signals to the Japanese in the hope that they at least file their income taxes.(APE)

The expected deluge on the Palace in the light of all the revelations on the Jueteng issue are expected to be the usual years old (in Tagalog: gasgas na talaga) but nonetheless expect the ff: [1] Political attacks by rogue elements who wish to destroy the government. [2] Another likely candidate will be: The political opposition springing another attack on the "integrity" of this government : [3] Also, it's the communists taking advantage of the issue and using all the attention focused on Jueteng to sow discord and begin desalination efforts : [4] This goes for the rightists as well. So choose your explanation. All we know is that the more things change the more they become the same with this government...By the way, did I forget the two Japanese stragglers who are also out to destroy the Arroyo government?

NEED FOR NEW ALIBI SOUGHT
There was a tragic accident reported today, 11May 05 where a mini bus slammed against a mountain side in Benguet in an effort to slow down the bus but instead flipped it over. Not that we seek to make fun of the tragedy, but we are seeking a new alibi from jeepney, bus and other multi-passengers vehicles of mass transport. Anyone who has had some sort of accident with a jeepney or bus gets the age old excuse wherein the brakes are faulted for the accident. As a matter of fact, in today's tragic accident, where 27 perished, the conductor was quoted as having said that the reason the bus crashed was that he had failed to add the brake fluid today. As one who has some experience with automobiles, trucks and heavy equipment, unless there is an inherent problem with the brakes, one need not fill this up with brake fluid everyday. One checks brake fluid, one does not fill it up everyday. At any rate, I hope my plea does not go unheard, please let the "walang preno" alibi keep going anymore. Let it stop, for crying out loud. Find another excuse for your carelessness and stupidity. My next expose will be on why jeepneys do not use their head lights at night.

Sadly, the Philippines makes it to the top again. This time, it is for being the most dangerous country in the world for journalists to do their jobs. Yet instead of responding in a serious manner to the danger, the Palace dismissed the claims, a move that further distanced the government from it's citizens. We may not be feeling the effects of these killings, but not for long. Sooner than we think the problem will continue till the government recognizes it as a problem and not something we are making up. Which journalist will become the next statistic? 5.4.05

NOT SMART. Smart Phones have desecrated the trees all over Roxas Blvd. The latest report we have received today is that they are now "uglifying" the Subic area. I guess they think that posting those silly banners all over the place will gain them more subscribers. Wrong. This stupid practice actually turns people off, and is a waste of money. We have yet to get an email that they are doing what is right. Here is a copy of the email that is going around re their raping of trees along Roxas Blvd. As if to wash their hands of the matter, the letter reply they sent to John Silva, who wrote the letter below, claims that it was their subcontractor that put the posters up. In which case, they look even more stupid by not knowing what their people are doing. Please cut and paste the email and pass to ten people and ask them to pass to ten more, or send via BCC to your mailing list. Just think of it as consumers versus the monopolies. Dear Butch,You know, I've been telling all my friends that Smart and Globe no
longer pound their ad banners on trees after I had a talk with both
companies last year. The past year and traveling around, I see you've
told your people no more trees. But now I'm pissed again because on
Roxas Boulevard there are ad banners about the ALIW festival of which
your Smart Logo is included and these banners are pounded on helpless
coconut trees throughout the boulevard. Will you please tell your
thugs to take those banners down?
Meanwhile I am sending this e mail to all my other friends and I want
them all to send you an e -mail (note his above) and telling you
likewise to take them down. I am also telling all my friends to send
this e mail to everybody else on their list to tell them of this
wounding of trees by Smart. I don't know what Smart has against trees
but its certainly sadistic and NOT SMART.
Do it now. The trees are bleeding to death.John L. Silva--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
WWHATTAGUY.. Anti-gun activist Nandy "Make my Day" Pacheco announced today that after his successful anti-gun drive, he shall now embark on an anti-icepick project. He wants to have all icepicks, knives, 2x2 pcs of wood, iron pipes, cannons and tanks banned from sale in the Philippines. His reasons are that these WMD can also kill people, and that actually, knives kill more people than guns do. But he has targeted the guns more specifically because he went to London once and thinks that we can do the same here. Nandy may also want the song "My Way" banned from karaoke bars because the song kills more people than guns or knives do.

American Basketball player Crisano caught illegally carrying his personal handgun while buying fake DVD's to boot (no pun intended) [story featured on SAKSI April 22, 05 6PM]. Yet he was released the following day on a technicality. On the other hand, one wonders what kind of treatment the authorities would render upon a simple Juan dela Cruz as police implement GMA's strict rules on firearms. Apparently, her rules are applicable to Filipinos only and not to Americana basketball players. Great going, GMA!! CONSPIRACY THEORY 101?- What is going on here? The newspaper accounts tell us now that Atong Ang was the only person to benefit from that notorious 2-ball gambling "Bingo" game. The same paper (Phil Star, 3.10.05) also ran a story about the Court of Appeals clearing Dante Tan in that other case, the infamous BW stock scandal. Both these people are close buddies of Erap. Call them his cronies, if you will. But if you follow the events closely,it may appear that the road may be slowly being paved to clear the way for Estrada to possibly get off cases filed against him. Question is, who is behind all of this? Too much of a coincidence to be just that- a coincidence. These events are a tragic blow to the government's fight against graft and corruption. We shall soon see what happens next, but these events alone should already raise some flags. The fact that the Sandiganbayan is dragging it's feet regarding cases involving the ousted president provides us with some clues as to what the future may hold for this shattered democracy. Or should I say Demo-crazy? Why is the Philippines considered as the #2 most corrupt country in Asia? Because cases of bribery by Business Executives as in the country's largest telephone company reported in the media as having bribed former President Estrada with PHP20 Million. Estrada was removed from office by people power, but the corrupt businessman remains in his office, allowed to conduct business in God knows what manner. The real problem is that after the smoke clears, government "forgets" about the case of the businessman, a member of the elitist "Makati Business Club", and coddles the ex-president. Thus giving government employees, corrupt businessmen and the public a great example of how they can get away with virtually anything. How long the Arroyo government remains this way will determine how long it will take till the Philippines works it's way to become Asia's Number One in the "most corrupt country list. I wonder if the former President, Diosdado Macapagal and father of present president, is turning in his grave to see how small the country's image has shrunk in the eyes of the world.

The telephone pole, typical of what you see all over Metro Manila, is an example of how PLDT does its work. Expansion via merely putting up more wires on telephone poles older then the average reader of this website. In lieu of new poles or additional support for old ones, the usage of old poles saves PLDT tons of money which they choose to budget their high priced executives and lawyers. Then they put up an ad featuring their so-called "Best Company in the Country" spiel. I guess they are right. The ad is definitely an indication of what the Filipino gets in terms of "Best" service. No wonder we have lagged behind even Vietnam and are next only to Sri Lanka in terms of economic growth. It's the practice of giving really poor but expensive service to struggling consumers, who have no choice but to swallow this bitter pill.

Is this guy kidding or what? January 12, 2004 page B6 Phil. Daily Inquirer had a press release on EX-PLDT CEO Manuel Pangilinan talking about "ethics" and calling on Filipinos to "fulfill their civic responsibilities" in the coming elections. Pardon me, but isn't this the same guy who has a pending case for paying twenty million pesos to the deposed-for-corruption President Joseph Estrada's fictitious Jose Velarde's account? Makes one wonder what the hell he is talking about when he speaks of ethics. Also, the laws in the country do not allow foreign ownership of public utilities like television, radio, telephone companies, etc. So how come an Indonesian outfit now seems to be owner of the largest telephone monopoly in the country? Just wondering...

NTC rebuffs Smart and Globe in their fascistic request for SUN to halt it's 24/7 scheme. Digitel's SUN Cellular has been offering unlimited voice and text for its plan holders. While Smart has been destroying the countryside and favorite vacation sites sceneries by putting out millions of pesos weekly for advertisements, SUN opted to offer instead the 24/7 program which, unlike the major carriers, is a permanent program, as per SUN's spokesman during an interview said on the ANC Channel aired on Feb. 13, 2005. SUN has proven that they can lower prices without losing money, and giving back to the consumer. In the meantime, Smart and Globe, without bothering to address the problems of the consumer, would rather make hay while they can, and try to shut down any competitor that offers better deals for the consumer. To wit, if a company that has a market share of less than 5% of a 33 million strong cell phone subscriber base can scare Smart and Globe out of their pants and will continue to hammer down on the little David that are Smart and Globe. They are the predators, not SUN as they claim. They are bullies and have no interest whatsoever in doing the country's economy some good by helping consumers. Instead, they squeeze the cellphone user for as much as they can by high rates and onerous. While the ruling to allow SUN to operate the 24/7 service has been allowed, it appears that the battle is not over. In other words, even if the NTC has spoken, there will still be hearings on the matter. Time for Smart and Globe's dirty tricks department. A reversal of this ruling should be met by consumers with boycotts of Smart and Globe at the least. Maybe if everyone "forgot" to pay their bills on time, or prepaid subscribers can cut their card purchases by half. The bullying, which is a lot worst coming from Smart than Globe, should give them a wake-up call they will not forget.Who do they think they are, anyway? They can buy as many officials as they can, but they can't fight the people. From one David to another, Digitel, hold fast and remember that the people are rooting for you.

Signs of the times: the usually overcrowded motels are not seeing brisk business, as per a TV report. Looks like either there are less lovers in the country or the people have no money to afford the motel gig. Makes one wonder how we will be after one more year with gloria at the helm.

Commercials on cable TV??! Aw' c'mon!! The reason a lot of people subscribe to cable partially to get away from the overbearing and often exaggerated advertisements we see on regular TV viewing. We have already paid the cable companies, and that is where they derive their income. Now they smell cash and are going to ruin our TV viewing by putting commercials on cable channels. So now we have to pay for watching TV ads? Gee whiz.

A controversial CEO was reportedly about to graduate as valedictorian in his high school-San Beda College. However, he lost the award as he was caught cheating. Tsk tsk. On the road to becoming a legend in his own mind and a lousy "captain of industry". More like a cook on a sinking ship.

GEORGE BUSH SEEKS PHILIPPINE GOVERNMENT ASSISTANCE TO ENSURE HIS CANDIDATES WIN IRAQI ELECTIONS. CLAIMS THE GMA EXPERIENCE PROVES WE HAVE THE BEST "HOW TO WIN AN ELECTION" SYSTEM IN THE WORLD.SMART TELECOM NOW SCREWS UP PAY TV (CABLE) BY PLACING ADS EVERY TEN TO FIFTEEN MINUTES IN VARIOUS CHANNELS, PROVING ONCE AGAIN THAT WHEN IT COMES TO RUINING ANY VIEWING EXPERIENCE, THEY ARE NUMBER ONE. NTC PROVES ITSELF USELESS AGAIN...GMA buddies up to Imelda Marcos during a function as featured in the Inquirer. What is this then? Ulirang Ina Mo meets Ulirang Una No?

FLASH!!!
We just got hold of an inch-thick white paper entitled "Demystifying the Goddess". According to the document, mere possession of this could result in the termination of the employee holding it. That's big news. Expect something big to arrive soon- at a computer near you. FLASH!!!!

Bravo to the Peruvian Security Forces. The security forces assigned to the APEC Conference succeeded in implementing their security plan to the strictest detail. Whenever the American President travels, his security detail coordinates with the local security forces. Because they are Americans, the world's most powerful country, they usually get their way, and even when visiting foreign lands, tend to bully their way around. An example to illustrate this is when, a few years ago, then VP Erap Estrada was asked to leave the spot he was standing on at the NAIA airport tarmac, where he was in charge of greeting arriving foreign dignitaries. For once, and rightly so, Erap refused to allow them to push him around. But the point of this is to show how the gringos think they can push everyone around. So join security forces and citizens the world over and congratulate the Peruvians for being able to block off the security of GW in Peru. They were so successful the security detail of Bush had to yell for his boss to rescue him. Bravo Peru, bravo. How I wish we had their cojones.

Speaking of cojones, or the lack of them,
the brave Texan visited Columbia in his South American tour. I don't know about you but I grew up on Western cowboy movies and even now you get to see how Walker, Texas Ranger tackles 10 bad guys all by his lonesome. It maybe that Texans have grown soft, or maybe their leader is the exception to the rule, but the security contingent guarding GW Bush had, as a newspaper report had reported a total of 15,000 security forces to guard him while in an island in Columbia. After this embarrassing report, there came the news byte that there had been a plot to assassinate the Numero Uno leader of the world.
PINOY TIME. Maybe still more cojones are the issue in this next story but it has to be said that the leading television stations and the government regulatory body in charge of taking control of the stations have been showing the populace and all the tourists who fly into town, stay at hotels and tune into TV to catch the news only to find out that the news comes in at an average of 45 minutes to a record breaking one and a half hour late. And this is done on a nightly basis. And all this to maximize the airing of commercials. It is no wonder our culture of being late has little chance of changing. Everywhere you go everything runs behind time. And until people realize that time is a commodity that can never be replaced, they will remain users of the lame, shameful excuse called "Filipino Time". Gloria wants to make a pakitang tao gesture by announcing that she will visit FPJ's wake on the 21st. This is a gesture that she may regret. And she is not going to do anyone any good. There is no reconciliation as some wish to see. They gap between GMA and more and more Filipinos everyday is an indication of this. And this column is not making this up. Just look at the SWS report. And if she thinks that by going to see FPJ she will warm some hearts, she is dead wrong. She will just make already boiling blood boil over.

BUSH WINS. The world is now officially fu*****.
And we thought Pinoys did not know how to vote. Obviously, we do not have a monopoly on "DUH" voters.

I guess one happy terrorist after the Bush win is Osama Bin Laden.
His master stroke, that of sending a message to the West days before the elections about his still being around worked. That video, combined with Bush' campaign messages of fear and more fear really must have struck a chord in the heart of 50% of Americans. They are now giving up some of their liberties and rights to a cowboy who dragged them into a stupid war and threatens to bring more turmoil to the already shaken up world. Good Grief.

AS US ELECTIONS DRAW TO A CLOSE, FORMER PLDT CEO M. PANGILINAN CALLS FOR AMERICANS TO SUPPORT DAN QUAYLE.
Problem is, Quayle is not running for office.

Is this TV show with it or not? In the light of the shrinking peso, rising violence, the expose about the gazillion peso kickback scandals in the military, cops getting killed, a Filipino gets kidnapped in Afghanistan--basically a country just about ready to go bust, and the TV show of "Pare and Mare" decide to do a one hour feature on guess what? basketball.
We don't deserve this country. We are too busy playing games instead of focusing on what should be discussed. Hopeless? Ano ba yan, Winnie?

Military is smarting from the accusations being hurled at them.
But the key factor will be the middle line officers, the captains, majors, lieutenants--the junior officers. It is they who shall decide the future of Las Islas Filipinas, the Banana Republic.
And the politicians are giving them all the reasons.

EDITORIAL October 20 2004 :
At a time when the country needs the president most, when crisis after crisis is hitting the already devastated country, has anyone seen or heard from her?
This is the true test of leadership. It's make or break for the republic. Help, Mrs. President, the Bananas are falling all over the place and your people need you to rally them behind you. If you were around, that is. No, my mistake. don't help us. Mrs. president. DO YOUR JOB and solve these problems. You wanted the position so much everyone could see how much you ached for it. Well well, here it is! Now handle it. From the poor starving to death to the generals with condos in New York to the Congress to the corrupt cop on the beat to the drug dealers found everywhere to the Al Quedda plotting their next attack. Where are you? Still dancing with your schoolmates? A forgivable excuse if you had been working real hard on the issues facing the country now. But pinning medals, digging an inaugural ditch, what-have-you just won't cut it. We need a real president NOW. Oh, some unsolicited advice. Whatever you do, don't call George Bush for advise, he's in deeper shit than you are.

Oct 19, 2004 Quotable Quote: from Ignacio Bunye,
Malacanang mouthpiece on the murder on Police Commander Oct 18 2004. "We will go after the killers. After all, everyone knows that killing is a violation of human rights". Well DUH...

VIRRA MALL is about to become the next Quiapo
. A breeding ground of cheater retail outlets who deal in stolen phones and pirated software. If you thought you had a hard time getting stores to comply with the no return no exchange policy, try returning a defective piece of equipment to these guys (Orange DVD players ring a bell to you?) get ready to get mauled if you insist. Hey, ask Edu Manzano. And he had a gun! For the el cheapo department, I recommend the Next Base DVD players. More reliable. And don't buy from the usual places. Email me and Ill let you know where to find the Next Base units. (This is a public service in case the pldt lawyers decide to use this against me in the case as unfair competition against them. You know how some bottom dwellers can get, always looking for that chance to make a case in court. By the way, buddy, you lost, remember?) That's my beef with them. If they were honest with their dealings and didn't try to make a fast buck off everyone by intimidation and sheer bullying, I wouldn't have a problem, but the problem is bad now. And if they add a mosque, chances are it will just bring more of them into this area. Let's see if Ortigas can give a warranty for items sold. First off, they are illegal (the software) but that's is ok as long as its not local but they pirate even the local stuff. Hard enough for our artists to make money, they get robbed by their "brother Pinoys". So let me get it right. Ortigas doesn't care if his place becomes a denizen of hoods as long as he collects the monthly rent? Money ain't got no color , I guess.

NO SPIN ZONE MY ASS... BILL O'REILLY, who has a rightwing (kill 'em all let God sort them out)show on FOX Channel, otherwise known as the Bush station, is facing a lawsuit from one of his associate producers for sexual harassment. His various email to the producers reportedly too lewd to reprint. His Fox News program now shows his voice a little more stressed. He sounds tense, at the least. O'Reilly, is America's equivalent to Ronnie Nathanielz, a native Sri Lankan who was reportedly given Philippine Citizenship by Marcos in exchange for his services as a propagandist. Why he wasn't deported after EDSA 1 is beyond me.

Guess What? The guy who sent PLDT crashing to the ground now how been assigned to Negros Navigation. I wonder how long it will take until that company hits bottom. (no pun intended.) Place your bets folks. Some people are born smart. Some are born rich. Poor Money. He was just born. Note to Money: Ahoy Money!! Your company adrift yet??

PHILIPPINES GETS FIRST OLYMPIC MEDAL, LANDS PLACE IN GUINNESS BOOK
The Philippine entourage to the 2004 Olympics won a gold medal and a place in the Guinness book of World Records. The special awards were given for the sheer number of non-athletes who joined the Philippine Entourage. The total who sported the Philippine flag numbered 948, while only 43 were actual athletes. Of these, the BIG (Immigrations) expects only 12 to return, while the rest are expected to stay throughout Europe as care-givers, or the type. Others, who have used the event as an excuse to deposit their hidden wealth in Austria and Switzerland. They used our weightlifters to do this. These amazing feats won us a gold medal in the Olympics and a slot in the Guinness Book of World Records. .

Did you notice that the only person who appears with more press releases than anyone else who makes press releases in the entire journalism industry is Max Soliven? I never saw Chino Roces appear in any Manila Times edition. He saw to that. This other guy sees to the opposite.

A tale of two moneys. There were once two moneys, One's real name was cash, while the others real name was Saleem. Cash kept his money well and took care of his finances of that of others, while the other, Saleem, tried to compete with Imeldific as he went on a buying spree, pretending he was a Smart businessman. Well he didn't fool people for long, because Saleem kept forgetting to make what in business they call "due diligence" audits. One of the biggest bloopers of them all was when 13,000 employees all at then same time forgot to register a single domain name for four months. They then laid the blame for all their business woes miseries and bad joss on the webmaster who picked up the domain name as a tool to combat their plan to meter telephones. Oh yes the Internet. What would the porn industry be without it?
On to Saleem the flatfoot. His masters on the big island had reached the point where they had decided that Saleem was losing way too much money. They had to sell many an asset because of Saleem's simply amazing bad judgment. So Money Saleem blunders his way into executive nowhere land and has decreed that he shall punish all and sundry who were connected to the anti-metering movement, esp. this website by taking them to court, cost notwithstanding to the PLDT stockholders e.g. the small fry.
But it's too late now, for he has already been removed from his former more powerful position as President of PLDT and unceremoniously been kicked upstairs as chairman or the guy in charge of attending cocktails meeting diplomats, cutting ribbons, (yawn) other stuff like that.

Bush attacks Kerry on Vietnam when he wasn't even there. DUH.

The most feared man on earth and his political party have been has been launching personal attacks regarding his political opponents Vietnam war record. In the meantime, Bush, who not only refused to serve his country in Vietnam but along with other rich kids chose to join the local militia, did not want to take a mandatory drug test. Probably got out of it with Daddy's help. Point of it is, Kerry was taking bullets from the Viet Cong and Bush was was a weekend warrior who did not want to take a drug test. Period.
Government announces that times are hard.
It's good to know that we have a government that cares for us. They may be 20 years behind in getting their economic intelligence, but hey, they may have been busy doing their other jobs, what with times being so hard and all. But we appreciate the President taking time to tell us that times are hard. Who knows, without the information, we might not have have noticed.

LET BUSH FIGHT HIS OWN WAR. IF HIS OWN PEOPLE DON'T WANT TO, WHY SHOULD WE?
Its as simple as that. What are we doing in this war anyway? What did the United Nations have to say about it to begin with anyway? They said No, didn't they? Are we not more responsible to the UN and the Filipino people than we are to Mr. GW Bush?
One Filipino is worth more than ten GW's, Madam President, let's get clear on that.

ARREST ORDER OUT FOR DISINI
It seems that the Philippine government has finally taken note of the fact that there may have been some dirty deals going on between Disini, marcos, and their suppliers. Chismis is that Disini, for example, cornered the monopoly on cigarrette filters. All tobacco companies had to buy their filters only from him and him alone. Just like if you want to buy a PH domain, you have to buy it from Joel Disini and Joel Disini only. From them and them alone. No competition. Seems to run in the blood, apparently. And they can dictate the price they want. Buti lang nawala si Herdis. Tangay ang kayayaman ng Pinas. But we remain stuck, we, as a third world country paying the price of a minimum of two years for a regular domain. That's $70.00 And you have no choice but to buy it for two years. Iba talaga ang pagmamahal nito sa bayan niya at sa kapwa niyang Pinoy. While in the US, where they deregulated the cc TLDChristmas Island, like Tuvalu(.TV), non-stock, non-profit Christmas Island Community administering .CX. What has happened to our country's domain name in the hands of one man was the threat of it becoming used as the symbol for cellphones worldwide, and other similar projects. And all this is possible because Disini is answerable to no one. At present we have a small group, a tiny group that got Malacanang to issue an order to hopefully prevent any radical changes like this. Who knows what else they have in mind. Ironic, isn't it? You would think that a huge company like PLDT would think of spending a piece of their huge income in fighting for their country and do what's right. But instead to choose to pick on a simple nobody over a domain they didn't even care enough to begin with. Hmm anyway pardon me getting off-track, there. As I was saying, there is still no way of knowing how far we have come in our quest to have a joint group of the academe (private sector) and government sector working together to disentangle Disini's Gordian Knot. Maybe socialized pricing. I mean his pricing is among the most expensive in the world considering we are a) a third world country b) can barely afford it c) he forces customers to buy for two years while everyone else has a one year option while he insists on two. ICANN, the Internet Police will definitely know about this. There are rules and there are rules, I guess if you are a Disini and warrants of arrest come almost twenty years after the crime, you can relax.
If Joel needs a lawyer I can recommend him one from one of the biggest law firms of the country. He also presently is handling the case against me in pldt vs. pldt.com. Good ol' say it, don't spray it is his moniker. Aka Eddie Peregrina his nom de Guerre.

It
's not true that Imelda is seeking an injunction to stop the documentary named after her because her bold scenes had bad lighting. Filipino being held in Iraq, militants threaten to behead him unless Philippine government pulls out of Iraq. First of all, this is George W. Bush's War. GMA, eager to please GW, jumped in quick as a fox in a chicken coop. GW's agenda is oil, and we won't get anything out of it. We are just being used. Look at the list of countries that are being used by GW Bush and you will find that aside from the UK, there are hardly any other first world nations that are participating in GW's war. Let's call the other countries that joined the SUCKER Bunch. They are all that GW was able to sucker into his war. Can this administration now explain to the dela Cruz family that if he is beheaded he died in honor? What will GMA say? That he died defending GW Bush's oil interests? All I can say is it's gonna be a long hard time explaining this one to the dela Cruz family. Do you think Mr. Bush gives a damn about us? Hey, all we are to them is a conveniently situated landing and take-off point in the globe for their aircraft and refueling point for their sea craft.

"GMA won't cut or extend term" PDI Headline July 8, 2004 Hope you will pardon us Madame, but we seem to have heard that one before. Poor Dinky. She does so much good for the country then gets slammed by the President for a political favor. That's why this country is so progressive. Politics rules. Good people get shafted and the real intelligent guys get their jobs. (sigh) Yes, my countrymen, it is her (photo above), and yes, my countrymen, GMA is trying to make friends with her. Ain't politics grand? Aren't you glad you voted for GMA? What the heck, you say, maybe they just have the same shoe size and GMA is just trying to bum a few dozen pairs of shoes from the old geezer. Well, if you've ever noticed their size difference, you will have noted that the sizes will never match so the agenda must be something else. What it is, only the Shadow knows. Days after the Proclamation and already they are talking about making the President the Prime Minister as well. Yoda and his band of merry men have obviously been planning this for some time now. Lets talk about getting this country out of being at par with Sri Lanka (no offense meant to the Sri Lankans), but we were number one in the 60's until marcos came along and gave a whole new meaning to the word "theft". Can the President please put political ambitions behind her and concentrate on getting this poor country on the road again? She has to or face the wrath of many who did not vote for her might not wait for 2010 and even many who did. And I don't mean Poe and his bunch. They are all washed up. The riot police saw to that last week .Thankfully the government is resurrecting the charges against Herminio Disini, the man behind the Westinghouse Nuclear Plant debacle for which we taxpayers are paying daily for. He bought himself a chateau and the title that comes along with the estate. He has the passion for skiing and is reportedly known to foot the entire picture. The fight goes on. More intelligent and technically oriented personalities than I are also in the cause. This small group of people fighting to make public the domain finally got the Office of the President to issue an Executive Order to empower the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) to come up with an oversight committee to look into the possibility of redelegating the PH domain to a non-stock, non-profit organization composed of members from both the private sector and government.

Disini will follow the ski season all over the world. Of course he can do this because he made money by getting a kickback from the construction of the Bataan nuclear plant, which he supposedly shared with marcos, of course. If only this government could also investigate the other Disini, the one who monopolizes the local PH domain. His prices remain among the highest in the world for a country domain, and up to about a couple of years ago, word on the street was that his company may or may not have been issuing official receipts. We are not surprised that his brother, who he has sent to Harvard purportedly to improve his lawyering skills, has taken sides with pldt (the giant telephone company) in my battle for this domain name. The author of this website had made public his stance against .ph and filed a case through proper channels. Eventually, the case was dropped, but that was only a small part

Bet you didn't know this one. Lito Lapid will be hiring translators and lawyers for almost everything he will be doing in the Senate. That's because he only finished elementary schooling and can't speak english. So, while everyone had his eyes trained on FPJ's high school , it was Lito Lapid who slipped in through the back door. Oh well. Who knows, he may just pull it off. Or be like Noli de Castro when he was a Senator. There was an understanding that when he would take the mike, no one would interpolate him. I guess the ex-deal was that he would be kind to them in his TV shows or something. Only God knows what sort of deals these guys get into at our expense. Now he is a heartbeat away from the Presidency. Scary thought, isn't it?The case of the Jaworski and Yap kids, who supposedly shot it out resulting with one of them getting both his legs hit but neither of them in jail just shows how the justice system works around here. But it isn't just here. In Gitmo, or Guantanamo, where the Americans keep their Afghan prisoners without benefit of the Geneva accord, inmates who are of American, British or Australian citizenship are given the "Get out of Jail" card, quicker than you can say "pldtsuckspldtsucks". So It's just a matter of where you are from and who you know. Period. The President spent P5Million for the inauguration ceremonies in Cebu. Didn't she spend enough getting elected? Don't we get to have a say on how much she spends for the party? NEWS FLASH Source from Cebu (usually unreliable) claims that the actual expense was reportedly P10 Million and not just the initial P5M as claimed. Musta been a blast.

To those who are in the legal field. Before you make that IT Law book purchase, remember that the other side's legal counsel reportedly authored two books on IT Law in the Philippines. Lemme tell you from first hand experience, folks, even if it were given to me, I wouldn't read it. I mean c'mon, you don't do stuff like ask the judge to change the entire transcript of an entire hearing. Maybe correct some typos and stuff like that yes, but to ask for an entire hearing be changed because you are losing a case?? Helloooo?? I wonder if they have a glass window to keep saliva away from my face because when this guy cross examines you, well, he should say it, not spray it, know what I mean? Well, what does PLDT care anyway, they don't even bother to send a company rep to check on what is happening in the hearing. So how do they know if their lawyers are doing their jobs? They don't. And obviously, little do they care. As long as they keep paying their lawyers they think they are OK. But sooner or later they are going to be asked by their stockholders and maybe even their board of directors what action they have taken regarding this case. And the answer is nothing. They even defied the judge's instructions (which we followed) but they completely ignored. After all, they are PLDT. Did I hear someone in the back shouting Negros Navigation? OK. Will look more into it.

Regarding that guy. Let's just put it this way: what kind of man would let himself be called "Nene"? And if they think those senators are real- whoa!! Reality check, people. Look at who were voted into office- would you please? Judy Ann Santos. Parokya ni Edgar (my buddies) Erap's Spitting image. And I mean Spitting image. Lucky for us the man who invented the cell phone didn't make it. Neither did our version of the world's richest man, Eddie Gil, who is now dabbling in television sitcoms. Maybe he can pay some of his bills. Filipinos seem to continue to enter Iraq to make a few bucks. There were not as many votes as expected from the OFW's because there are a lot of undocumented Pinoys working under false names, so they are wary of getting caught. The exact number of our countrymen working overseas cannot really be known as we have too many TNT's running around the globe. Yet the top story in the media was the congressman who screams "syat ap" as the opposition tried in vain to stall the inevitable. This website and its entire staff, webmaster and floor sweeper which totals a number of one person (me) voted not for the GMA but the people, it seems, have spoken. The dangers of a constitutional crisis will only serve to confuse further an already discombobulated military. Enough already.

The news said they had arrested Atty. Elly Pamatong for scattering metal spikes all over EDSA and damaging around 160 vehicle's tires. When they interviewed him in his "mountain hideout" he said his next goal was to burn down schools. If he had said because of the high tuition fees maybe someone would have understood. This is the guy who demanded to see GW Bush and wants the Philippines to become another state of the USA. He was sporting an American flag on his fatigues during his first interview, He was wise enough to remove it for subsequent interviews. What a bully.

So I was reading this rather long and effusive defense of Pimentel in the PDI. Full of praises and s*** like that. Turns out it was written by Atty. Rene Saguisag. Finally they have found something in common.

The world, especially the Filipinos, finally find themselves an honest-to-goodness hero in the form of MGen A. Taguba. Guess what Bush and Rumsfeld do to him for exposing America's violation of Iraqi human rights. They transfer him to a desk job in the Pentagon. You would think our government at the very least would pull out our troops in Iraq as a sign of protest or disgust. They would or could never do this to a white officer, a Major General at that. But Taguba ain't no white man. He a brown boy.
And since we allow them to trample all over us they will. Thank you to our leadership. Thank you for allowing Washington to treat us like they did 100 years ago. Thank you very much. Thank you for siding with the wrong side of this war (Bush). I guarantee you there will be hell to pay if the republicans lose this election. And they will. While we are at it, where is all the aid money your pal Dubya promised? The Filipino people don't see it. Maybe because it isn't there. Why don't you ask your National Security Advisor to enumerate the countries which are with America in this "war". You might be surprised to read that list because you will find countries that you have never heard of before. It's a list of banana republics propped up by the CIA. Gwan, do your homework before you drag this nation into this quagmire for much longer. By the way, our neighbor, Indonesia has 235 million Muslims living in it. May 22 2004

May 28, 2004 2200H or around ten PM. It's not your set set, folks. There are people working at the House of Representatives. But are they there to make laws? No. Are they there to solve the many problems that beset the nation? No. Are they there to find solutions to the increasing poverty and falling economy? No. They are working very hard to ensure that they get their various positions in government. To elbow out the other guy so that they get their next three or six years of power and influence. If they only worked half as hard for the motherland, we would not be in the quagmire that the same type of politicians put us in to begin with. Oppositionist Kit Tatad voices his objection to Hollywood strongman Steven Seagal campaigning for GMA. Suggest he take up the matter straight to Mr Seagal himself. Last man standing is right.

Ballots missing from Comelec. As usual, Comelec blames people who are out to damage the good name of Comelec for this incident. (cough cough) Somebody run that by me again please!?!? Is the computer scam the same story perchance?Bong Coo files her name "Bong" in Comelec when she registered as a candidate. Bong Revilla files as "Kap". Days away from election time and Revilla realizes his act of plain genius. All of a sudden, Bong Coo has to find another nickname. Let Revilla pay for his mistakes. If he can't even write down his nickname in a form, then maybe he isn't worthy of becoming a senator, like 70% of the slackers now occupying what used to be a prestigious Upper House. Big shame that the people were deprived of seeing the candidates on TV and radio in a battle of wits to present their platforms or lack thereof in order for people to better judge who they could vote for. They opted instead to go around the country where they spent a maximum of two seconds with each candidate. How can people tell what kind of person they are voting for if these people refuse to let the people judge for themselves who they are? This was the biggest crime of all committed during this election, or should I say non-election.The only good thing that came out of this campaign was the fact that campaign posters covered all the Smart posters and changed the view on the way to Baguio for a change. Mabuhay kayo! Pero di ko pa rin ko kayo iboboto.Funny, now there's a TV commercial saying that Senator Osmena is responsible for all these cellphones. Maybe he also invented the Internet. One can never tell. Speaking of which, whatever happened to his rape cases? For the second time, FPJ gets into a tiff with a reporter. So on May 4, 2004, ten reporters walked out on him. Question is, how will he treat the media if he wins? Seems like Sotto does the talking whenever an incident like this crops up, which doesn't necessarily make things better. Maybe that is why they put Binay in his place.Where is the administration going to get the money to replace all the cash that was depleted during the election period? And if I am told otherwise, i.e. that no money was used for campaign purposes, then I must have been deaf, dumb and blind for the past few months.Biggest disappointment in this campaign: Tito Guingona. Ganoon ka tindi ang galit niya kay GMA. Man, she must have ticked him off mighty bad.

My election wish on the election baddies: may your computers be infected with a virus for every lie you tell. Boy, that's a lotta viruses.

The story of the skull.

Before the advent of the cellphone, Filipinos had to rely on one company to provide them with access to telephones as a means of communication. Unfortunately, this company knew that being the only ones around to provide this service, they could get away with anything, including taking their sweet time in providing businesses and homes with telephones. This could account for the fact that the cellphone business is bursting. It could be because a majority of Pinoys never had telephones before. All because instead of putting the national interest ahead of anything else, it seemed that PLDT may have had another agenda. To make money tons and tons of moolah for themselves. Nothing wrong with that, after all, what do people go into business for? right? But if you go into a public utility service, you have a responsibility to the Filipino people to provide the proper service. This link will bring you to a site where we hosted a contest for the longest wait for a consumer who had applied for a telephone. What you will see is an actual receipt from PLDT and their stamp marking the date they received the application. Things haven't changed much, as is obvious by the fact that the only reason PLDT is making money now is their cell phone business. The best thing that happened to the telephone industry was when other players were allowed into the game. The bad news is that they have been behaving like a cartel. Remember the texting issue? I was one of those who sued the telcos for breach of contract and some other legal stuff. Point being they obviously acted in concert when they removed the free text from the consumers. Timing was too obvious, no matter that they insist they are not. Anyway, we got our TRO but it only lasted for about two weeks then they got away with removing the free text. And where is government in all this? Sometimes it seems like they are on the side of the telcos. With no one else there to protect the Pinoy consumer, we are like little fish in an arawanah aquarium. Where else in the world do you have cell phone cards that expire in two months, forcing you to use your phone so that you are forced to buy new cards? Where else do you have an NTC memo circular ordering that phone calls be billed by 6 second intervals and not by full minutes? This memo was issued but the telcos got the courts to negate it. Wala talaga tayong laban. Only in the Philippines. GMA's government wasn't able to do much, sad to say, to protect the consumers from these sharks. I shudder at the thought of what will happen if we see an FPJ government in Malacanang. ent of ce

Wanna really get into www.pldt.com?

Monday, February 09, 2004
From The Manila Times PLDT loses court bid to shutdown websiteBy Chin Wong AFTER more than four years in court, website owner Gerry Kaimo won the first round in his landmark legal battle with the Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. (pldt) over the “pldt.com” domain. In an order issued late last month, Judge Reynaldo B. Daway of the Quezon City Regional Trial Court Branch 90 denied pldt’s request for a preliminary injunction that would have shutdown Kaimo’s satirical website while the case was being decided. pldt sued Kaimo and the Philippine League for Democratic Telecommunications, Inc. (pldti) for P1.35 million in September 1999 for trademark violation over the  “www.pldt.com” domain. Kaimo registered the domain name with US-based Network Solutions, Inc., and built a satirical website on it that attacked and ridiculed then-President Joseph Estrada and the phone company. Kaimo has filed a countersuit of P50 million against pldt. pldti, which maintains it has nothing to do with the pldt.com website, sought P100 million in counter damages.A pretrial conference has been set for February 23. Kaimo said pldt would probably appeal the ruling, saying his recent victory was significant. “It was worth it. I would do it all over again,” he told the Times. “I’m glad that we won. It shows that one voice can still be heard amongst a crowd, that a monopoly cannot shut one person up. That the Internet is a weapon that can be used. pldt got into two things that they do not know anything about—the Internet and freedom of speech.” Kaimo’s co-accused, pldti, also expressed satisfaction over the ruling. “We’re gratified and pleased that both Gerry and pldti have been vindicated,” said Jonathan Domingo, pldti president. “This shows that the specious claims of a monopolist bully cannot overcome the right of free expression of an individual.” The Times tried to reach pldt for comment but was unable to reach its spokesman by phone. While pldt has argued trademark infringement, Kaimo and pldti portrayed the case as a battle for free speech. Kaimo said the personal cost of the suit has been high. “I spent P6,000 a hearing for 4 1/2 years—that’s what it cost me personally.” The documentary evidence they provided in the case, he added, was “waist-high.” On the other hand, he estimated that pldt spent P15 million on the case by hiring the large Sycip Salazar law firm, and stands to spend more on appeal. “These guys don’t really care,” Kaimo said. “Every time they show up there (in court), it costs thousands, which they charge to pldt, which passes it on to the subscriber. The loser is the pldt subscriber.” The other cost to pldt, Kaimo said, was the negative publicity. “They can’t even take care of one domain name,” he said. “They can’t settle one case all by themselves, and have to go to the biggest law firm to do it. They have a responsibility to their stockholders. Is it worth suing Gerry Kaimo for a silly website that took potshots at Erap Estrada and [pldt President and CEO] Manny Pangilinan’s management style? We had nothing to do with the internal conflicts in pldt. We just had a lot of fun. It just happened to be at their expense.” He said the publicly traded pldt should justify the lawsuit and its expense to its stockholders, including all subscribers who are required to buy shares of stock in the phone company.

Asked when the contested domain registration would expire, Kaimo said he had just renewed it for two years. “I’ll just keep renewing it,” he said. “I own the damn thing.”

Ragnarok, PLDT problems linked to hacker attacks

A GLOBAL attack targeting Cisco routers downed the networks of dominant
carrier Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company (PLDT) last week,
including the computer servers hosting a popular online game in the
Philippines, an announcement by a local game publisher said last week.According to Ragnarok game publisher Level-UP's newsletter on April 7, the "service interruptions" last week were caused by an attack on Cisco routers worldwide that started on March 29, the same day the company launched a new Ragnarok game episode known as War of Emperium."Level Up! and PLDT took on some hackers in PVP action, but (Ragnarok) is back online and in demand," the announcement said.Level Up said that it resolved the "network problems" last week in 48 hours with PLDT, noting it had upgraded its database servers, and replaced all its switches.Level-UP said it also conducted "service maintenance" causing its online games to be unavailable since last week.Ragnarok online will resume the War of the Emperium episode on Wednesdays and Saturdays, the firm added.Officials from both PLDT and Level-Up were unavailable for comment despite repeated calls. The global attack came after Cisco Systems issued a warning last week, warning customers of possible attacks after a group of Italian teenage hackers posted a "hacker's kit" that exploited several Cisco router
vulnerabilities, which were discovered more than a year to four years ago.Cisco has detailed the system vulnerabilities at www.cisco.com/warp/public/707/cisco-sn-20040326-exploits.shtml.Most of the security vulnerabilities discovered made Cisco routers and switches susceptible to distributed denial-of-service attacks.Denial-of-service attacks occur when hackers "hold hostage" hundreds of servers and flood a target network with millions of spurious data packets,
which then overwhelm switches and routers.Meanwhile, PLDT officials were unable to comment on some service problems that some users of its DSL broadband Internet service reported experiencing since last week.

INQ7.net has learned that some DSL subscribers in Metro Manila, and outside of the city have had problems connecting to the DSL services of the telephone company since last week.

"How buddies Marcos and Disini tried to beat the Pinoy to a pulp."
From Ibon Databank Phils., Inc. re the Cellophil Caper. (http://jubileesouth.org/tribunal/accusation_3/philippines.htm)
Amazing how history has a way repeating itself. In the story below, our government officials are getting a taste of how it was when marcos used to rule and how they had to kowtow to the infamous marcos cronies. Unfortunately for the Filipino people, many of these cronies are still around. The difference is that Government officials and ordinary citizens can now fight for what they believe in without fear of being thrown in jail because Marcos is long gone. Which is maybe a point that some people need to be reminded of. That is, unless they may be suffering from delusions of grandeur. If that is the problem, then they may need professional help. Which is quite possible, considering the incident when the not-so-young doctor was subjected to verbal abuse and a shouting down which could have affected his health. The good doctor is widely respected and considered by many to be the father of the Internet in the Philippines. You see, for some, it's not all only about money and how to make it at any cost.

DIGITAL LIFE
By Chin Wong (THE MANILA TIMES)
Mr. Disini shoots for the moon

THE first time it happened, it was amusing. Last February, the administrator of the PH domain, Joel Disini, snubbed a public hearing on proposed guidelines for the Philippine registry. Instead of showing up to argue his case against regulation, he sent an employee to videotape the proceedings.
National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) Deputy Commissioner Jorge Sarmiento made light of the snub, joking with the cameraman to get his good side.
Last week, however, Disini clearly got on Sarmiento’s wrong side by pulling the same stunt again.
Disini gave the government ample warning, of course. In a letter to the chair of the Commission on Information and Communication Technology, he said he would not participate in the hearing.
“Our experience was that face-to-face showdowns with our detractors do little to further the process,” Disini wrote. “As you are aware, some see the issues on an emotional and personal level, and our participation merely results in unseemly outbursts that get in the way of productive discussions.”
This observation has some merit. I distinctly remember a March 2001 meeting of the Philippine Internet Service Organization (PISO) where an angry Disini yelled accusations and unseemly insults across the room at one of his detractors, Dr. Rodolfo Villarica, an elderly gentleman that many in the community acknowledge as the father of the Philippine Internet.
Maybe Disini was right to avoid such scenes.
Still, ticking off the NTC may not be the most prudent course to take.
After all, the government seems determined to put the guidelines in place by next month in the belief that the PH domain is a public resource.
Although most Internet users don’t realize it, the PH domain is important because it’s the only country code assigned to the Philippines that is recognized worldwide. Because of this, the
government, private businesses, schools, other organizations and individuals use the PH domain to promote the Philippines and its products and services.
Unfortunately, a private individual—Disini—controls the PH domain and has been able to run things the way he sees fit. He answers to no one in the Philippines, and that’s why he’s been able to raise prices on PH domains in the past without consulting anyone.
Domain as private property
On his website, Disini clearly shows that he thinks of the domain is his private property.
“The PH Domain is not a public resource over which the State has a sovereign right,” he writes, contradicting the statement of principles in the draft guidelines. He argues that the state has “made no contributions to the Internet,” the domain name system or even the local registry itself.
“The only basis for the State asserting its ‘rights’ is that .PH was
designated as the domain identifying the Philippines. But mere
identification does not bestow such rights to the State,” he says.
Disini’s assertion that the domain is not a public resource flies
directly in the face of the “best practices” guide established by the Internet Corporation of Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) Government Advisory Committee (GAC).
That document, entitled “Principles for the Delegation and
Administration of Country Code Top Level Domains,” clearly states that the Internet naming system is a public resource to be administered in the public interest.
In general, the GAC principles also recognize that each government has the ultimate responsibility within its territory for its national public-policy objectives.
While scoffing at the idea of the state’s “rights” over the domain,
Disini is not shy about asserting his own.
In particular, he opposes a proposal that would separate the
registry—the database of Internet names and addresses—from the registrar, the entity that sells domains to the public.
“The proposed separation of the Registry and Registrar functions
requires that Mr. Disini give up his Registrar business,” Disini’s
website states. “The NTC, by compelling Mr. Disini to do so, may be violating the Constitution. It arbitrarily takes away the Registrar business, which is lawfully Mr. Disini’s.’”
Again, we see a reference to ownership—in this case, Disini’s ownership of the registrar.
This also flies in the face of a key ICANN document, RFC 1591, which says “concerns about ‘rights’ and ‘ownership’ of domains are inappropriate. It is appropriate to be concerned about
‘responsibilities’ and ‘service’ to the community.”
On top of this, Disini may have misread the guidelines. The draft guidelines do not force him to give up the registrar. They merely say that he must choose between the registry and the registrar. Disini could give up the registry and hang on to his registrar business. The only hitch here is that for the first time, he’d have to compete on even terms—with no undue advantage—with other PH registrars that may be set up. And that’s enough to scare the heck out of any monopoly.
On his website, Disini argues that making him give up “his” database of registrants would be like forcing Smart, Globe, or any Internet service provider to give up their list of customers. This is a flawed argument. Many companies can offer cell phone or Internet services but only one entity is authorized to register PH domain names, and it should do so, ICANN says, as a public service.
Who owns the moon?
Many people who are new to the PH controversy wonder how Disini got control of the domain in the first place. The quick answer is, he was the first, qualified person who had the foresight to apply for it with the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) back in 1989.
It is true that Disini has invested in the domain system and turned it into a tidy business.
Does that give him the exclusive right over a name that rightly belongs to the entire country?
The Americans were the first to land on the moon. Do they own it? Or have exclusive rights over its use? Even they aren’t that arrogant.

TELCO MONOPOLY PLDT LOSES FIGHT TO SHUT DOWN PLDT.COM Read PDI, Manila Times and Chin.

One wonders of the Comelec officials have television sets and have been watching any shows this week. GMA has been campaigning in the guise of using Easter messages so many times I have memorized her Easter message. This is unfair to all the other candidates and a violation of the rules. She wants this Presidency so badly even I can taste it.NETWORK BUSY. DIRTYING THE COUNTRY.
By John L. Silva

The 18th Philippine Ad Congress, held recently in Baguio, gave most of the participants who drove up a chance to see along the way what their advertising colleagues do to earn their keep, reap awards and industry accolades.

Banners, proclaiming the "Addict(ive)" and "Simply Amazing" aspects of Smart cell phones, were nailed on every tree, posted on every telephone pole, on both sides of the street, from the border of Tarlac, through Pangasinan on both MacArthur Highway and short cut roads. Banners were planted at intervals along Kennon Road and Marcos Highway, reaching all the way to Baguio, hanged on any vacant wall or gates, and hammered to the last remaining pine trees. It would be FCB's (Smart's advertising agency's) tour de force tactic. Wipe out the competition by leaving no place to hang their banners.

"Simply Amazing?"
How about "Simply Revolting!"

Globe managed to sneak in some banner advertising, but had to resign themselves by finding empty billboard structures and hanging as many banners as possible. It looked like garbage in the air but they seemed to think otherwise.

In the recent past, 16' x 20' vinyl ads for fertilizer, pig feed, and children's candies were wrapped on old acacia trees around Pangasinan. By the time you got to the boulders on Kennon Road, graffiti proclaiming past political candidates and juvenile love messages took over.

This time, it's the cell phone giants with gargantuan ad budgets stopping at nothing to create the longest, dirtiest, ugliest highway and countryside all to induce you to buy their cell phone services.

What I find appalling are the gentlemen or gentlewomen who run both the advertising and the cell phone companies. They're urbane, highly educated and well traveled. They're aware of advertising studies that show cluttered billboards lose their effectivity. They read industry reports about billboards causing road accidents, elevating blood pressure and increasing stress levels. They're clued into info about American states like Hawaii, Alaska, Maine and Vermont, European countries like Norway and tens of thousands of smaller towns and cities around the world that have banned billboards outright and seen dramatic increases in tourism and investments. They certainly are in the know that billboards deflate real estate prices. And if they had a chance at driving anywhere in the world, they would motor through the billboard-free sceneries of Provence and Tuscany.

Yet, in their own country, they're absolutely clueless, seemingly
oblivious to all the research findings, let alone good taste, and continue wiping out the remaining visual heritage and precious sights of our country.

When you reach Luisita, Tarlac you can barely discern, and even less appreciate the giant statue of falling hero Benigno Aquino, which is assaulted by ads everywhere. The gleaming rice fields of Pangasinan can't be gushed over what with fluttering cell phone banners planted every 50 feet.

Any hope of grand majestic sights of the China Sea and the Cordillera ranges as you ascend Marcos Highway or Kennon are near futile. Instead, Smart's banners assault you with the sub-message "Screw the view. Load your phone."

You thought there'd be a respite up in the city of pines. The cell phone giants have not only tainted Session Road and the other main streets but peaceful, charming, old Baguio roads like South Drive have been smeared with the Smart ADDICT signs.

A word on ADDICT signs. It's a poor word choice to smother the country with it considering we have a serious drug problem. Billboards are already identified to addiction with cigarette and liquor companies being one of its largest ad users. Last Holy Week in sunny Boracay, ADDICT banners were hammered on every coconut tree on that white stretch of sand. Tourists and travel photographers were unable to get a pristine shot without ADDICT signs getting in the way. Sub-message? Screw tourism. It's not as profitable as cell phone addicts paying to hear their fave bold star's heavy breathing.

Many of us commiserate with Department of Tourism Secretary Dick Gordon who has to sell the country given the bombings, the coups and the kidnappings. But those things happen too in England and Spain and they still get tens of millions of tourists. Why, because there are no banners and billboards blocking the views of their castles and mountains. Dick's headaches are actually coup plotters in Makati Ad agencies who get their jollies seeing the country wrapped in vinyl.

Take a look at these pictures of molested trees and mosaics of banners erected by petty hoodlums with no taste. Does this really look like a country you'd invite your Balikbayan cousins to visit? No way: Polled Americans (that includes Fil-Ams) hate billboards. Europeans aren't too far behind either and they'll flee to Bali faster than you can say Mabuhay.

How do we get back at these corporations who make us look like one big Smokey Mountain? Fortunately for them, consumer advocacy is still in its infancy in these parts. But it starts with the first step of calling, faxing, e-mailing them and confronting the corporate presidents and giving them a piece of our mind. The next step is to fight for strict laws and enforcement with teeth accompanied by punitive fines.

There's also consumer choice. Between the two big cell phone companies, Smart has been the most offensive in dirtying up the countryside. That should give you a hint and fair warning to Globe or Sun not to get sucked into polluting the country as well.

As for the ad agencies who seduce the companies into thinking blanket advertising makes sense, start a revolt in your neighborhood like the barrio captains and concerned citizens of Laguna who decided that plastic Tanduay posters wrapped around their old trees were abominable and had them removed. Let's take it one more step by mailing or dropping these posters at the ad agency's front doors. See if they like garbage on their premises.

The cell phone companies may have achieved brand name recall, spending hundreds of millions of advertising pesos. Unfortunately there's one brand name that's completely lost all recall thanks to these hucksters. That brand name is called the Philippines. She was a knockout of a product once, with tag lines like "Pearl of the Orient". She had a jingle which started "Bayang magiliw" It was so catchy, it became a national anthem. Brand loyalty was so high, that some even died for her! Imagine that!

Give the cell phone companies and their advertisers your choicest words! Get exercised, tear down their posters and dump them in their offices! Reclaim "Eden del Mar", Jose Rizal's final poetic tagline for our now filthy looking country.

Actually, I do not see what the entire brouhaha is about FPJ's US passport. The guy is just making sure that in case he wins, he can immediately move to the USA and migrate, as 19% of Filipinos are wont to do in the event of a Poe victory. 19.01.04

Gloria opens fire on the born again Christians.
After firing NTC Chief Armi Jane Borje with one day's notice, the administration has made it loud and clear that the born again movement has no place in her present government. How Borje can present a clear and present danger to her government is beyond me. However, an unnamed source quoted by the PDI was quoted as saying that "the position would be filled by someone who would use the NTC to raise campaign funds from the telecommunications firms". As a born again Christian, it is highly unlikely that Armi Jane Borje will allow herself to be used to do the administration's dirty work. So Gloria killed two birds with one stone. She got back at Presidential aspirant Eddie Villanueva, who heads the movement Borje allegedly belongs to, and can put in place someone who can help raise campaign funds for her re-election bid. Oh well, Gloria was never really with the people at EDSA, so one can't say her true colors are showing. Maybe they were always there to begin with. It's just that the Filipino people, with their penchant for clutching at straws, refused to see what was really there.
