Gerry Kaimo, owner of the PLDT.COM domain name, examines court documents before a hearing of the trademark infringement suit filed against him by the Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company (PLDT). PLDT wants the Regional Trial Court of Quezon City to stop Kaimo from using the domain name for his satirical site, which pokes fun at the phone company and various political figures. It is the first time such a trademark suit has been filed in the Philippines. PLDT faces P100M countersuit

THE Philippine League for Democratic Telecommunications, Inc. (PLDTI), a consumer watchdog group, is seeking P100 million in damages from the Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company (PLDT) for dragging it into a trademark dispute in which the group claims it is not involved.

LAN sales recover in second quarter

SALES of local-area network (LAN) products showed signs of life in the second quarter this year, rising to $10.68 million, up 62% from $6.57 million in the same quarter last year. The second quarter figures, furnished by the International Data Corporation (IDC), indicated a recovery of sorts from tepid first quarter sales of $8.72 million, which were about 9% lower than the same period in 1998.

MORE than 1,000 Web sites were pruned down in preliminary judging to 89 finalists who will vie for the Philippine Web Awards in 18 categories, event organizers said this month. The Web Awards, which recognize excellence and creativity in the design of Philippine Web sites, are scheduled to be given out Nov. 17 at the New World Hotel.
