Desperate

There is an old saying - "desperate men do desperate deeds." Well, it appears that President Estrada is sounding and acting pretty desperate enough to try and cling to his rapidly sinking career boat. Many of our people know that it's over for the likes of him - really over. It's just too bad he refuses to see that the ugly naked truth of his misdeeds has helped to ruin him.

He has tried, in sorry fashion, to rally his "hakotized" supporters to rise up against critical voices by saying that they come from the rich, the intellectual and business classes of society. In doing so he breaks the law that bars incitement of the masses towards rebellion. He should know better. He is, after all, the president. But he is a president who seems not to give a damm any longer. He has already broken a host of laws, including moral ones, so why should he care now?

The late and unlamented Marcos had the chance of his lifetime to remain in power forever had he ordered the Army to forcibly disperse the crowds during the EDSA revolution. But at the last minute, perhaps just once, he had a lucid moment...he had come into the presidency with the pride of personal heroism and nationalistic fervor. He had thought of himself as a great hero. Was he to go out of the presidency and Philippine history as a cowardly heel? His final choice saved thousands of lives and preserved what little pride and dignity he had left.

Estrada will not be so fortunate. He came into the presidency a shameless corruptible weakling and will go out in disgrace. That is, unless he leaves voluntarily before he's impeached.

A rat coming in is still a rat when it leaves.
